Step 1 · Mark the Drain Path

Use stakes to mark the center line of your French drain trench. Run a string line between the stakes, tensioned tightly. Ensure the string line has a consistent downward slope of approximately 1/4 inch per linear foot towards the planned discharge area to facilitate water flow. You can check the slope using a line level or a laser level.
